Hale Kakahi is your vision of the ultimate Hawaiian retreat. Nestled in lush, tropical Puna on the Big Island, it was formerly the home of Sharene and Harrison Klein, owners of Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals, a successful Hawaii vacation rental service. They realized that Hale Kakahi was so special it should be shared with visitors, and their 20 years of experience delighting guests went into making Hale Kakahi an unforgettable experience!

Great Room at Hale Kakahi
Entering the Hale Kakahi grounds, you travel down a long drive bordered by monkeypod, banana, plumeria and palm trees until you reach the elegant two-story house. The door opens to the foyer and the massive Great Room, which overwhelms you with its spectacular ocean view through floor-to-ceiling windows and over the wide lanai that extends across the entire front of the home. The interior is a wood lover’s dream, with walls, ceilings, floors, cabinets and counters constructed of nine exotic woods including koa, monkeypod, Spanish Cedar, rosewood and mango.

In addition to the great view, the Great Room offers a comfortable place to relax and visit. The room has good reading lights as well as cable TV and a DVD player for evening entertainment. You’ll find a complete gourmet kitchen for meals, with premium appliances including two convection ovens and a Sub-Zero refrigerator. The breakfast bar/cooktop is made from a single beautiful piece of monkeypod wood. You’ll be on the lanai for most meals, but the dining area has a travertine table that seats six for indoor dining.

A small office next to the Great Room (with telephone, free long-distance service to the US and Canada, free high-speed Internet, and of course more great views) leads to the air-conditioned master bedroom. (The master bedroom is air-conditioned; the rest of the house has ceiling fans and lots of floor-to-ceiling windows to keep you comfortable.) With a room like this, you won’t want to get out of bed! The bed is a California king with a high-quality pillow-top mattress, and the room also has its own TV and DVD player. The master bath adjacent to the bedroom has a walk-in shower, double vanity, and Jacuzzi bathtub/spa. An estate wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t have a pool and Hale Kakahi’s 30-foot lap pool is just outside the master bedroom.

View from Hale Kakahi
The nearly 3-acre Hale Kakahi estate includes a diverse mix of lush vegetation, manicured lawns, exotic fruit trees, koi ponds, fountains, palm trees, and magnificent lava oceanfront. In season, whales pass by and play in the surf just offshore. The front lawn even has its own golf tee and green!

Hale Kakahi is located on the Hilo side of the Big Island, which is the tropical, windward side. The area is lushly green, nothing like the desert areas or barren moonscape in some south and west sections of the island. The estate is near the quiet residential area of Hawaiian Beaches, which is great for walking. Pahoa Town with several restaurants and interesting shops is less than 15 minutes away. Hale Kakahi is your perfect base for day trips to the city of Hilo (Hawaii’s most Hawaiian city — a 30-minute drive), Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (less than an hour away), the Hamakua Coast with its waterfalls and botanical gardens, remote Waipio Valley, and perhaps even Mauna Kea for the adventurous (its snow-capped peak shown below behind Hilo Bay).
